AGLBICAL officers are happy to report great success in the
wake of their "Sexual Identity Issues in Counseling" Spring Workshop
presented at UAB. Alabama
counselors from a variety of specialties and settings arrived from all
over the state to attend this exciting and informative event!
This professional development opportunity for counselors
was sponsored by AGLBICAL as their first-ever statewide workshop.
Planners of the event could not have been more pleased with the response
and attendance.

SPEAKERS / TOPICS

Ethical and Legal Perspectives in Counseling Sexual Minority Youth in
Our Schools
Presenter: Gloria Anderson, MA, LPC, NCC
School counselors, uncertain about their understanding of the needs of
gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students and the issues
concerning them, will find much guidance in the related ethical codes
of their profession as well as in case law established over the past
several years.

Out in the Workplace: GLBT Issues in Career Counseling
Presenter: Michael Lebeau, MEd
This presentation will address critical workplace and job market issues
related to the career planning concerns and job search struggles of gay
and lesbian candidates and employees.

GLBT Issues in the Juvenile Justice System
Presenter: Donna Melder, NCC, LPC
This session will examine the rise in gay and lesbian adolescents
involved in juvenile courts and how counselors may be able to work with
this population to curb re-offending.
Unique Challenges to Wellness in the GLBT Community
Presenters: Paul Hard, MA LPC-SC, NCC and Glenda Elliott, Ph.D., LPC-SC,
NCC
This
presentation will review the major risks and challenges experienced by
GLBT individuals and families - including depression, grief and loss,
substance abuse, relationship issues, and spiritual crises.
ALSO
A panel discussion
and open-ended question-and-answer session took place at the end of the
conference.
Information
Tables from Local Advocacy Agencies were featured.
Door Prizes
were given away. Winners received Topical Counseling Books and
other fun gufts.
Silent Art Auction Featuring Poignant and Attractive Art Pieces Created
by Local Artists took place. Attendees were able to purchase many
beautiful art pieces. The
